Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Where do you get your ideas?

I stumble upon them in everyday life, through conversations, observations, and sometimes lucid dreams. Where I grew up, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and my experiences in college and freelancing have informed my creative process and writing philosophy. I now call Seattle my home. See my extensive influences page for comprehensive details.

What was the initial spark for your current work in progress, 'The Femtosecond Illusion: Einstein Has Gravity'?

Science has been a fascination all my life from the earliest age. My father was a professional chemist. He imparted a deep appreciation for what scientists contribute to society. One of my fondest memories is taking a tour of Fermilab, located in Batavia, Illinois.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

My writing ability matured in undergrad at Purdue University-Fort Wayne back in the 2000s. I did not begin writing for the purpose of publishing books until 2020.

How do you write?

I write using the classic "flying by the seat of my pants" method, where I let the story unfold without a strict outline. I do extensive research on concepts within my works as well, and my editing and proofing process is thorough and precise. I often switch between using my smartphone and my desktop computer in the writing process, as the smartphone allows me to get exercise as I work in my home office. I use both Google Docs and Microsoft Word, leveraging text to speech read-aloud features and other accessibility tools to enhance my workflow. As I write, I imagine it being turned into an audiobook and follow protocols to make it suitable for spoken performance. While my existing audiobooks were voiced by other narrators, I intend to voice all my productions going forward.

If you didn't write, what would you do for work?

I would work in information technology as a project manager.

When were you born?

1982.

What is your education and professional background?

I hold two degrees: Bachelor of General Studies from Purdue University-Fort Wayne (2009) and Master of Science in Information Technology Management from Western Governors University (2019). Professionally, I have experience in project management and information technology, as well as extensive freelancing work including six years in professional integrated pest management and software development.

What are your email address, phone number, and social media?

My personal email address and phone number are not public. The contact form on this website and Goodreads are the only official ways to interact with me. For author purposes, I do not use any social media platforms other than Goodreads. I have an author profile on Facebook, but I do not use it for communication and do not respond there.

Do you have an agent or a publisher?

I am a one-person show. While I have no literary agent and no traditional publisher, I am considering it for my next book. Currently, I am firmly self-published and enjoy the freedom that brings. I have not invested in marketing or advertising in any meaningful way outside of a few Goodreads book giveaways. So far, as of January 2026, my work has not been featured in any major media outlets.

Do you have any pen names?

No, I do not use any pen names. I publish under my full name Emily Tiffany Joy due to its uniqueness and out of respect to existing public figures with similar names.

Why the switch from LGBT memoir to hard science fiction and speculative theory?

While I am proud of my memoir Joy Realized and take pride in my identity, I consider Joy Realized to be a back catalogue work to my current writing era. It exists as an artifact of 2020 to 2024, and my writing direction since then has changed. Hard science fiction appeals to me more now, and my personal identity is no longer a theme of my latest works.

Why is this site so fast?

The site is hand-coded and served from the Cloudflare edge. It contains zero ads. I prioritize a 100/100 performance score because I value the reader's time.

Will you read my manuscript, beta read for me, or act as an editor for my book?

No, I work independently and do not offer manuscript reading, beta reading, or editing services, but I wish you good fortune in your writing careers!

Where can I get your books?

See my bibliography for a list of my published works and where to buy them.
